First Name/Last Name Is in Incorrect Format—Error When Registering for SmartVault

Table of contents

Overview

As a first time SmartVault user, you might encounter an error preventing you from creating your user account if your name contains characters you can't use within a name.  The only usable special character within a name is a hyphen (-). Click here for more information on activating your account.

Cause

Often when a tax preparer creates a record in SmartVault for a married couple filing jointly, the tax preparer will use both first names joined with an & symbol. This automatically fills your registration with the special character &, which is not a usable character for registration names.

Resolution

  1. Click on the link sent to you via email to create your account.

  2. In this case, the & special character is included with the first name. If you attempt to create your account with this name, you'll receive an error. In other cases, you will need to remove any special characters except for a hyphen (-) in a first or last name.

  3. Replace the & character with the word "and". You can now click Create My User to finish your SmartVault account registration.
